On the evening of Trump’s inauguration, the government website reproductiverights.gov was taken offline. The website was developed by the Biden administration following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade and subsequent abortion bans in Republican-led states. It served as a critical digital resource for Americans seeking information about reproductive healthcare access and rights.
The site provided guidance on abortion access, reproductive healthcare options, and patient rights through its Know-Your-Rights fact sheet. “Reproductive health care, including access to birth control and safe and legal abortion care, is an essential part of your health and well-being,” the website stated. “While Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortion remains legal in many states, and other reproductive health care services remain protected by law.”
In addition to abortion information, the website clarified insurance coverage requirements under the Affordable Care Act. Most health insurance plans, including employer-based and private insurance, were required to cover specific birth control methods. During his first term, Trump’s administration allowed employers to opt out of providing birth control coverage based on religious or moral objections. Trump has also repeatedly called for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
The disappearance of reproductiverights.gov raises concerns about the future of federal health resources and reproductive healthcare under the new administration. Advocacy groups warn this could signal a broader effort to limit access to information and services at a time when states are grappling with widely varying abortion restrictions, mounting maternal and infant mortality rates—especially for African Americans—and rising healthcare costs.
The website remained active as recently as January 15th. The media reached out to the Trump administration for clarification about the removal of this online resource, but the White House has yet to respond.
